It's Black History Month in the US and we're celebrating by honoring the achievements of African American business giants. Let's get started with highlights from the extraordinary life of Reginald Lewis.
Reginald Lewis grew up in Baltimore, MD. He won a football scholarship to Virginia State College (an HBCU) where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in economics. He attended Harvard Law School, and went on to have a success career as practicing attorney first at a large law firm and then in his own practice. Mr. Lewis eventually made the shift to business and after several successful acquisitions, eventually became the first African American to own a billion dollar company, TLC Beatrice.
In 1992, Forbes listed Mr. Lewis among the 400 richest Americans, with a net worth estimated at $400 million. Sadly, he died at age 50 from brain cancer. You can learn more about his life and his work at http://www.rflewismuseum.org/.
