Respond vs. React: Secrets to Building Your Character

by PowerUp on August 13, 2007

There is a huge difference between responding and reacting. Leaders who inspire and motivate others understand the distinction between these actions and are able to respond as opposed to react to difficult or unpleasant situations. Let’s explore this distinction.

To respond involves acting in a measured and thoughtful manner.  Leaders who take time to think though situations before acting are able to respond in a reasonable and appropriate manner. This allows for fewer regrets.

To react involves letting your emotions drive your actions. Leaders who do not take time to think before acting often behave in ways that are inappropriate for the situation at hand. Reacting often leads to regrets and apologizes.

Today’s Tip for Upward Action: When faced with a difficult situation, take a few minutes to think about your most appropriate action so that you are able to respond in a reasonable manner that is fair and balanced. A thoughtful response will ultimately help build your creditability as a powerful leader who inspires and motivates others.
