Assertive vs. Aggresive - The Key to Successful Relationships

Strong and capable leadership is what inspires others to action. Effective leaders appreciate the distinction between assertive and aggressive leadership- and use the difference between the two in their advantage. Let’s explore the distinction …

Assertive Leadership - is bold and confident (not pushy). People are inspired by follow the assertive leader because she has a confident “presence” that makes you feel that she know what she’s doing, where she’s going - and can lead you there. Being assertive is often the most productive way to inspire others to action.

Aggressive Leadership - is forceful and can be perceived as combative.   Aggressive leaders often exhibit a disregard for others in a “determined” pursuit of their goal. While aggressiveness certainly has its place in the toolbox of an effective leader, this style must be used in a conscious and purposeful manner to accomplish the intended effect of getting a job done - while inspiring your team and colleagues by your action.

Discriminating use of assertiveness and aggressiveness in your personal leadership style will go a long way in (i) validating your credibility as an effective leader and (ii) increasing your ability to motivate and inspire others by your action.

Respond vs. React: Secrets to Building Your Character

There is a huge difference between responding and reacting. Leaders who inspire and motivate others understand the distinction between these actions and are able to respond as opposed to react to difficult or unpleasant situations. Let’s explore this distinction.

To respond involves acting in a measured and thoughtful manner.  Leaders who take time to think though situations before acting are able to respond in a reasonable and appropriate manner. This allows for fewer regrets.

To react involves letting your emotions drive your actions. Leaders who do not take time to think before acting often behave in ways that are inappropriate for the situation at hand. Reacting often leads to regrets and apologizes.

Today’s Tip for Upward Action: When faced with a difficult situation, take a few minutes to think about your most appropriate action so that you are able to respond in a reasonable manner that is fair and balanced. A thoughtful response will ultimately help build your creditability as a powerful leader who inspires and motivates others.
