I read an interesting post by Marty Baker on the Creativity Central Website entitled “Seven words that will change your life: The creativity of reframing” while researching a couple of points for the upcoming UpwardAction September teleclass.
The concept of asking your team a question in the negative is indeed intriguing. Although it seems counter intuitive to ask “How can I help you fail?” - this question may generate direct and insightful answers that give you just the information needed to lead in a more inspired and effective manner.
For example, the junior associate on your team may respond to this question by saying -”You can give me key facts about this matter after I’ve completed my research and I am in the middle of finalizing the brief … .”
Take some time to think about how this concept might help you get to the core of what your team is really thinking … and thus lead to accelerated success.
Until next time … Take Great Care.
